10. Geostorm (2016)
It revolves around a man who travels to space to stop climate-controlled satellites from creating a devastating storm. Parallel to the plot, things are set in motion to kill the president.
Combine that with Gerard Butler being the leading role, it should be reason enough for anyone to be excited about this action-packed sci-fi film (it might get delayed to early 2017 though).
9. Assassin’s Creed (2016)
Along with the upcoming World of Warcraft film, this movie is expected to help the public finally gain confidence in a video game movie adaptation.
Optimism is very high as the extremely talented Michael Fassbender was cast in the leading role.
8. Replicas (2016)
Directed by a female director Tanya Wexler, this movie stars the Matrix lead, Keanu Reeves, and is about a biologist who is trying to do everything he possibly can to bring his family back to life after they died in a car accident.
7. The Divergent Series: Allegiant (2016)
The upcoming third installment in this adaptation of a series of 4 young adult novels. Like many films of the same genre that came before it, e.g. Harry Potter, Twilight, etc., this movie builds major anticipation within the hearts and minds of its key demographic, which is comprised mostly of young teenagers.
6. Deadpool (2016)
Judging from the trailer and genius advertisement so far, it is safe to say that we are in for one hell of a ride when watching this movie.
The R-rated violence and vulgar, but self-aware, comedy are defining traits of this fictional mercenary, Deadpool. Marvel fans better hold their breath, as one of their loved comic book heroes comes to cinema in the most jaw-dropping fashion.
5. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
This is the third installment in the prestigious Captain America series. The film will ultimately give us a pay-off for the conflict that was set up way back in the first Avengers film between Captain America and Iron Man.
They’ve always had trouble seeing eye to eye with each other, and it seems that this time they couldn’t come to a solution without using their fists.
4. Star Trek: Beyond (2016)
This is the third film in this rebooted set of Star Trek films that have come out in the past half a dozen years.
J.J Abrams leaving the films after the second installment may leave some a bit worried, but rest assured the new fresh talents of Robert Orci and Justin Lin will truly leave their mark in this third edition of this iconic series.
3. X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
Bryan Singer returns with the next installment in the incredibly long-running now semi-rebooted X-men franchise. This time we’ll be seeing a batch of fresh new faces but in familiar attire, as some new actors were cast to play younger versions of characters we already know of, e.g., Cyclops, Storm, etc.
Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy reprise their roles as Magneto and Professor X, as the X-men possibly face off against their most deadly foe, Apocalypse.
2. Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
Independence Day is a film that revolutionized disaster movies. The sequel, directed again by Roland Emmerich, is expected to re-invest us into this genre of movies again. What worked best in the previous film was the smoothness of Will Smith and the socially awkward wit of Jeff Goldblum.
However, we will only see Jeff Goldblum return this time around, without Will Smith, which admittedly does deteriorate the anticipation of a film like this.
1. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Another sci-fi 2016 convention product and Zack Snyder’s long-awaited sequel to Man of Steel. It will finally set the incredibly hyped-up DC Cinematic Universe in motion, which is expected to rival or even surpass the popularity of the prevailing Marvel Cinematic Universe.
We will finally see the repercussions of some of the questionable decisions that Superman made in the “Man of Steel”. Moreover, one cannot wait for the epic showdown between our two main protagonists; Batman and Superman!
