7. Wolfenstein: The New Order
Remember World War II? The merciless Nazis were beaten to a pulp for the better and the Third Reich finally ended but imagine if the outcome of the dreadful war was reversed.
It is hard to imagine that but Wolfenstein: The New Order pushes the envelope by actually basing its game on the alternative history in which Nazis stood victorious. The interesting plot revolves around war veteran William Blazkowicz who has only one thing on his mind: Stopping the menacing Nazis from world domination.
While many of the games developed by MachineGames are decent at best, the present installment of the Wolfenstein series is worthy of much praise and quite better than all of its previous installments.
6. Far Cry 4
For an entire decade, the Far Cry franchise has been one of the most dominant first-person shooters regardless of the platform. Set in the Himalayas region of Kyrat, the game chronicles Ajay Ghale who has been assigned the mission of overthrowing the self-appointed dictator of a king, Pagan Min.
Serving as the fourth installment of the Far Cry series, the game is admittedly not one of the best works produced by Ubisoft Montreal but still is a remarkable video game in terms of storytelling and overall exciting gameplay as far as ammunition and weaponry are concerned.
5. Alien: Isolation
Intrigued by the mysterious extra-terrestrial and alien life form? Then this is definitely a game for you. Published by Sega and concocted by The Creative Assembly, Alien: Isolation is a thrilling first-person stealth game that confines itself to an intimidating genre of survival horror.
The most remarkable thing about the game is the fact that it was able to garner much more positive feedback than Sega’s previous Alien-themed games like Aliens: Colonial Marines and Aliens vs. Predator. With a frightening theme concerning the fate of the entire human existence, the game is an eccentric one.
4. Infamous Second Son
Set seven years after the events of the previous installment, Infamous Second Son is arguably the best game of the entire series, and the fact that it quickly sold over a million copies within nine days of its release, proves it. Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, the player controls the character, Delsin Rowe. The plot of the game is an attention-grabbing one since Rowe is a Conduit – a superhuman with powers to manipulate objects such as neon, smoke, and concrete to his advantage.
Realizing that his race of superhumans is in danger due to constantly being hunted down by society, it is up to Rowe to become a source of hope for others.
3. Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragons have been one of the most interesting and loved mythological creatures for centuries and have always been a cause of excitement in numerous movies, fiction, and of course video games as well. That is exactly where Electronic Arts’ Dragon Age: Inquisition comes in.
Developed by BioWare, the action role-playing video game serves as the sequel to the 2011 video game Dragon Age II and is amazingly much better than its two predecessors.
With several visual and artistic effects coupled with an aspiring fantasy tale, the game reaches a new level in terms of action adventure.
2. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
It has been over forty years since the death of J. R. R. Tolkien but his work is still recreated in the form of media. While the brand of The Lord of the Rings made quite an impact in Hollywood with The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies, the same can be said about video games like Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is one of the best games of the year.
Serving as a non-canon video game focusing on the events that took place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the player gets the chance to play as Talion, a ranger of Gondor who has wraith-like abilities, and lives to take down Sauron for killing his family.
Fans of the world imagined by Tolkien will be pleased to know that the slithering Gollum appears in the game as well.
1. Grand Theft Auto V
With only five major installments in its video game franchise, Grand Theft Auto stands out as the most recognizable and exceptional brand of all time. With a gap of five years between the current and last entry of GTA, Rockstar Games broke several world records with the release of Grand Theft Auto V for the platforms PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013.
In only a matter of time, the game was released for PlayStation 4 this year and even convinced several critics that it is possibly the greatest video game of all time.
With traditional elements of robbery, torture, adult activities, brawls, and of course disrespecting the law and order of the city, the game is without a doubt the best action-adventure video game of the year.
Honorable Mention: Driveclub
We can’t resist but mention Driveclub for its outstanding graphics and excellent online multiplayer – especially after its recent Patch 1.09 that removed almost all issues that pissed off players during the initial launch days.
