7. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Starring Felicity Jones and Diego Luna, the upcoming space opera film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will hit theatres next year. The movie will be the first installment of the Star Wars Anthology series and is set between the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope.
The movie is set to be released on December 16, 2016 – exactly one year after the release of the upcoming Star Wars movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
6. The Hateful Eight
Quentin Tarantino is back with a bang – literally – as he promises to showcase gun violence in his upcoming Western movie The Hateful Eight. Set a few years after the Civil War in Wyoming, the movie revolves around eight strangers in a stagecoach during a blizzard.
Considering the fact that his previous Western movie Django Unchained was a critical and commercial success, it can be safely assumed that The Hateful Eight will not disappoint at all. The best part of all: the movie reunites director Tarantino with his frequent cast selections including Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen, and Ennio Morricone.
5. Independence Day: Resurgence
The 1996 space science fiction disaster movie Independence Day was one hell of a movie and only time will tell how its upcoming sequel is being handled as Ronald Emmerich returns to the seat of the director.
Set twenty years after the events of the first film, planet Earth finds itself in a huge amount of trouble once again as several alien ships get ready to threaten the human race.
Though Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner, Vivica A. Fox and Judd Hirsch are set to reprise their roles from the original film, it is worth noting that leading star Will Smith will not be appearing as his demand of a $50 million paycheque was refused by 20th Century Fox.
4. Suicide Squad
Heath Ledger gave the performance of a lifetime when he portrayed The Joker in The Dark Knight to the point of winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. That is why Jared Leto has big shoes to fill as he has the responsibility of portraying the Clown Prince of Crime for the first time in eight years onscreen.
If you are a fan of Batman villains, Suicide Squad is a must-watch as apart from the joker, the movie features Deadshot, Killer Croc, Captain Boomerang, Harkey Quinn, Rick Flag, Enchantress, Slipknot, and Amanda Waller.
3. X-Men: Apocalypse
If Bryan Singer had not directed X-Men: Days of Future Past, the species would probably have been extinct from the world of cinema. The director will be returning another time for X-Men: Apocalypse to create an epic mutant mashup.
The movie will feature several familiar mutants such as Professor X, Magneto, Mystique, Beast, Quicksilver, Storm, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Havok, and Angel along with some new ones including Psylocke, Jubilee, and Apocalypse.
2. Captain America: Civil War
If you thought Batman and Superman are the only two superheroes fighting next year, you were wrong! Set after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the third installment of Captain America will feature turmoil among the superhero team.
Avengers break into two sub-factions; one led by Captain America and the other by Iron Man. The two hardly saw eye-to-eye in their previous meetings and now finally have the chance to settle the beef once and for all.
1. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
It is a question that has been asked and debated by die-hard DC fans for generations: Who will win a fight between Batman and Superman? The answer lies in the hands of director Zac Snyder as he will make two of the greatest superheroes of all time battle each other in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Along for the ride are several other iconic DC characters such as LexLuthor, Cyborg, Aquaman, and of course Wonder Woman. Promising an origin story of Justice League, the movie is perhaps the most anticipated superhero movie in a very long while and surely one of the biggest movies of 2016.
Hopefully, none of the most anticipated movies of 2016 have been missed in the above list. Feel free to share your views about these movies in the comments below!
