If you’re a massive motor-head, coupled with being a fanatic film fan, there’s nothing better than sitting down and watching a film set in the future and seeing all the cool cars they’ve designed to predict what a car will look like in the future.
Even more amazing is to look back at some iconic, futuristic films and seeing the “cars of the future” they’ve created and discovering that we’ve actually developed or aren’t far off from developing those cars.
In our featured infographic today we look at some of the most famous cars of the future portrayed in sci-fi movies.
We start with the stunning Audi RSQ, which was arguably the best bit about Will Smith’s I, Robot. This car gave Audi fans a glimpse to what the 2nd generation Audi R8 and TT would look like. It’s intriguing to see how similar they look.
Next we check out the flying Police “Spinner” from Harrison Ford’s cyber punk styled Blade Runner and investigate just how close we are from having flying cars. We’re actually not as far away as you may think.
After that we look at the Lexus featured in Tom Cruise’s Minority Report. This car takes “self-driving” technology to a whole new level. And, finally we check out the M-577 APC that appears in Aliens. The technology in this car, if you can call it a car, is really military standard. Also you won’t believe what the car was based on!
Of course, not every car we wanted to include could make it to the list. We thought long and hard about the car from the Sylvester Stallone film Demolition Man, a self-driving car that could easily be where Google Cars are heading. Weirdly, for what is essentially a very silly movie, Demolition Man also predicted the tablet computer, video calling and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s political career. If you don’t believe us watch the film, you’ll be very surprised!
We also left out the flying cars from Luc Besson’s technicolour masterpiece Fifth Element. Perhaps the saddest omissions are, however, some of the amazing vehicles from Mad Max: Fury Road. We felt that, as cool as they are, vehicles such as the War Rig were more cars of a dystopian future, rather than cars we actually might see on the road (or in the air) one day.
So what are you waiting for? Take a look at some of the most amazing movie cars of the future and find out just how close we are to being able to have a “car of the future”:
