2024 gave us some of the best movies, but many titles were flops or just not up to the mark. Here are some of the worst films of 2024 ranked by critics and viewers across the web.
15. Trap
The city is excited about the concert of the famous pop star Lady Raven. Two of her fans, Cooper and his daughter Riley, enthusiastically attend the concert. Soon, they sense something is wrong with the concert. The loud cheering and screams from fans hide something dark. The concert is set up to catch an infamous serial killer, ‘The Butcher’. With security cameras rigged and police ready with their weapons, will Copper and Riley survive the concert?
Despite strong performances from the cast and a decent story, the unrealistic twists and turns let the film down.
14. DarkGame
This thriller directed by Howard J. Ford, follows a detective determined to stop a sick online game show on the dark web. The detective has to race against time to save as many lives as possible because the contestants are competing for their lives.
The game is hosted by a mysterious sadistic man who enjoys torturing and killing people on live streams. On top of that, he has monetized the show, and people with similar sick mentality bet on the players. The movie shows the dark side of human nature and how far we are willing to go in the name of entertainment.
Despite having a very innovative story, the film is hard to watch because of poor execution.
13. Tarot
If you’re going to break the rules, be prepared for the consequences. A group of friends break the sacred rule of Tarot reading when they use someone else’s deck.
Unwillingly, they release an evil spirit trapped in the cards. Now, the cards predict their horrifying deaths. The group must race against time to escape the brutal future foretold in the cursed cards.
The movie was criticized for its generic ‘dumb college kids’ plot, heavy reliance on loud noises and jump scares, and lack of genuine suspense and creativity.
12. Megalopolis
The head of the Development Authority of New Rome, Cesar Catalina, has a grand Utopian vision for it. However, his vision and methods do not sit well with the city’s mayor, Frank Cicero. As Cesar tackles a bitter feud with the mayor, he also has to worry about his cousin, who undermines him at every possible opportunity in his bid for power.
The movie is an ambitious project but its complexity makes it overwhelming. The visuals were phenomenal but sometimes overshadowed the substance. The cast did a wonderful job but the characters seemed underdeveloped.
11. The Painter
This action thriller is directed by Kimani Ray Smith and written by Brian Buccellato. A retired CIA agent is thrown back into his past life when a mysterious woman from his past resurfaces. This exposes him to a dangerous world.
He is targeted by a ruthless killer and a rogue black ops program. His only option to survive: rely on the skills he learned in the life he left behind. The movie was criticized for its slow pace, dull action sequences, and underdeveloped characters.
10. Night Swim
When looking for a new home, people love to find one with a swimming pool. But not one like the one in this movie. Ray Waller, a major league baseball player, is forced into early retirement due to a degenerative illness. He moves into a new house with his wife and two children. The house has a backyard swimming pool. The pool’s depths contain a secret—an evil force that will terrorize the family.
The plot was too generic, the production house did not deliver the thrill expected, and there was a lack of genuine suspense.
9. Trigger Warning
Starring Jessica Alba as Parker, a CIA officer suffering from PTSD who returns to her hometown after the death of her father. She takes over the family bar. While in her hometown she uncovers a grand-scale conspiracy and a weapons deal that threatens the internal security of the US.
The plot was lacking originality, the characters weren’t at par with Jessica’s reputation and the plot lacked twists or surprises to keep the audience engaged.
8. Borderlands
The movie is based on a video game of the same name. Lilith is an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past who reluctantly returns to her home planet, Pandora, which is the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of the most powerful man in the universe. She alliances with a ragtag team of misfits to build a search party.
The characters lack complexity, the dialogue feels forced, and the film fails to capture the essence of the video game.
7. The Strangers: Chapter 1
After a couple’s car breaks down in a ghostly town, they take shelter in a remote cabin. The night brings with it horrors in the dark. Three masked strangers try to kill them with no apparent motive.
This is the first chapter of an upcoming horror film franchise. The movie is too generic for the trope, the scares were weakly executed and the plot was predictable.
6. Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp
The latest movie Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp didn’t do justice to the beloved Woodpecker.
Woody is kicked out of the forest for tormenting an influencer camper. Woody is not a team player so he decides to go to the nearby Camp Woo Hoo to learn teamwork. Here, Woody thinks he has found a forever home but things get difficult when an escaped convict arrives at the scene. He poses as the Chief of the rival Camp Hoo Rah, to rob a hidden treasure. The “Chief” wants to shut down Camp Woo Hoo.
The film is too lame to be taken seriously and probably can only entertain kids under 8.
5. The American Society of Magical Negroes
The film has touched upon a sensitive topic and people have mixed reviews about it. On top of that it did not bring anything new to the screen.
The story follows a young man who is recruited into a secret society. The society is exclusively for black magicians. The members dedicate their lives to one important cause: making the life of the white person easier. Racism is a very sensitive topic and the movie did not do justice to it. Not in terms of plot, not in terms of message.
4. Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie
One of our favorite childhood animated buddies, SpongeBob appears in this new adventure. Bikini Bottom is stolen. Yes, you heard that right. The whole town of Bikini Bottoms is scooped out of the ocean by a sinister mysterious company. SpongeBob and Sandy go on a quest to Texas, Sandy’s home state, to enlist her family to save their friends and town fellows.
The jokes didn’t sit well with the audience, the voice-over of the human characters was low budget and the characters were underdeveloped.
3. The Mummy Murders
A top reporter for a local news station in San Antonio, Texas investigates missing persons in his hometown. There are rumors that a serial killer is on the loose. As she digs deeper into the case she finds a connection with ancient mummies. She uncovers chilling secrets about the living and the undead that will lead her to the reason for the disappearances.
The movie was criticized for being a rip-off of ‘The Silence of the Lambs’. Its pace was seen as uneven, and the performances were not very convincing.
2. History of Evil
A family is on the run from a corrupt state. They find refuge in a safe house but things get worse for them. They discover the chilling history of the house and the horrifying events that happened there.
The dystopian setting was a good idea, but the critics thought it needed to be explored more to give depth to the movie’s context. The characters were underdeveloped, and the audience couldn’t connect with them on an emotional level.
1. Madame Web
Madame Web tells the origin story of one of Marvel’s most mysterious heroines, but it does not do justice to the original character in the comics.
Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who develops psychic abilities. She is forced to see things she didn’t know about her past. She is mysteriously connected to three young women. They are faced with a dangerous villain with the power to see the future. They must work together to defeat the adversary or face a grave fate.
The movie’s editing was choppy and confusing, and the villain lacked depth and character development.
