The craze of social networking sites is not only among the young generation but the children and adults as well. These sites have forced people to spend hours on computers checking the profiles, pictures and other updates of their friends and families. As it is rightly said that every coin has two sides, the same holds true with all popular social networking sites. If we look at the positive side of these sites, they have made people socially active and have also allowed them to stay in touch with their loved ones who are far off in other countries and states. But on the other hand, social networking sites have also caused various problems and due to this, parents have started hating these social networking sites.
If we look at the statistics, The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children report states that there are around 25% of the children who said that they were exposed to sexual and unwanted material while surfing the internet. Teens are among the major users of various popular social networking sites and as per statistics, around 73% of teens worldwide maintain a regular presence on different social networks. Out of all the teen users, around 37% of them send messages to their friends on a daily basis. It is interesting to know that 22% of the teen users do the login into their Facebook account for more than 10 times in a single day.
There are various types of activities that can be performed on these social networking sites which keep users hooked up for hours. Around 58% of the kids on these sites wish to see as to what others are writing while 57% likes to play games. Other activities include posting updates, posting pictures, answering fun questions, finding or reading the material, emailing, sharing a link, sharing videos and others.
The concerns of parents regarding social networking sites are increasing day by day. Around 88% of the parents are aware of the fact that their teenage children are using the internet to have communication with people whom they do not even know. These sites not only expose the children to unwanted material but also cause exploitation in many cases and cyberbullying is one of them (for example Amanda Todd). 1 child out of every 10 across the globe has been a victim of cyberbullying and it has been seen that these victims of bullying commit suicide 2 to 9 times more. The improper behavior that is acquired by children through these sites is also one of the major concerns for parents these days which mostly includes exaggerated and rebellious behavior.
Though parents cannot completely stop their children from surfing these sites due to huge exposure to the internet they can always keep a control on them by guiding them properly, keeping an eye on their activities, keeping them warned about different online threats and by monitoring them remotely!
