Although 2012 has been a great year for gamers in general, pc gamers were especially lucky for getting some really great titles coming their way. Here we take a look at the top 5 upcoming pc games of 2012 that you shouldn’t miss:
1. Half-Life 2: Episode 3
Half-Life 2: Episode Three is the third and final installment in a series of episodes following Half-Life 2. The project has been labeled highly ambitious and release is still a while off.
The episode is going to be set in the northern reaches of the world of Half-Life, these will be cold places filled with ice and snow, oh and a Borealis.
The Borealis is that great ship that disappeared during some experimentation by the same sort of scientists that caused the Resonance Cascade from the original Half-Life. From what we have seen from Portal and the previous Episodes the Borealis is a scientific ship that was involved in teleportation tests at the Aperture Science labs. Something went wrong which led to the ship disappearing completely from its original location. It is only during the events of Episode 2 that we find out that it has returned, this time in the coldest reaches of the world.
2. Battlefield 3
Battlefield 3 will feature the maximalist combined arms battles that made the series popular across single-player, co-operative and multiplayer modes. It will reintroduce several elements absent from the Bad Company games, including fighter jets, the prone position and 64-player battles on PC, while the consoles will support 24 players.
A new animation system will allow players to “drag fallen comrades into safety and mount weapons on almost any part of the terrain”. The destructible environments of DICE’s Frostbite engine will also be in use.
3. Modern Warfare 3
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is an upcoming first-person shooter video game. It will be the sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and the eighth installment in the Call of Duty series.
Modern Warfare 3 will pick up where MW2 left off, allowing players the chance to live modern-day combat situations instead of the more traditional war shooters that tend to take place around the World War 2 era.
4. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (previously Deus Ex 3) will be the third in the first-person role-playing game Deus Ex series and a prequel to the original game.
In the Deus Ex games, augmentations are body modifications that allow the user superhuman abilities. While augmentations in the first two games were nanotech, Human Revolution is set prior to both and instead features mechanical augmentations. These will be divided into four types: Combat, Stealth, Technology, and Social. Using social skills, social augmentations and stealth a player is able to play through the whole game killing only the bosses.
5. StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm
StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm is the second product in the StarCraft II trilogy featuring the zerg campaign and episode. Heart of the Swarm is a sequel to Wings of Liberty. It focuses on Sarah Kerrigan and the development of a zerg empire. More will be seen of the Kel Morian Combine and Umojan Protectorate.
