A British judge Jeremy Cooke has handed down sentences against the three Pakistani cricketers:  Mohammad Amir, Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and the agent Mazhar Majeed, who were convicted of spot fixing in a test match, at a hearing at London’s Southwark Crown Court. According to the verdict, Mazhar Majeed will be jailed for 2 years and 8 months, Salman Butt will be jailed for 30 months, Mohammad Asif will be jailed for 12 months and Mohammad Amir will be jailed for 6 months.

The whole fixing scandal started when the News of the World‘s editor, Mazher Mahmood, met agent Mazhar Majeed back in August pretending himself to be a wealthy Indian businessman seeking international cricketers for a tournament. The agent was secretly filmed in the sting operation accepting £150,000 in cash from Mahmood as part of a spot fixing arrangement. Agent Majeed promised that bowlers Asif and Amir would deliver 3 no balls at specific points in time during the test match between Pakistan and England at Lord’s from August 26 to 29 last year. Mazhar proved to be right and the cricketers were caught red handed with cash from their hotel.

Initially all the accused denied any involvement although later on all cricketers apologized and appealed for mercy. But today the judge dismissed all claims and appeals and punished the trio according to the law. All the cricketers and the agent were arrested immediately after the announcement of the verdict.
