How to Recover Deleted Files

In Windows “recycle bin” can be used to restore files that get accidentally deleted. But unfortunately, some users use shift+delete shortcut to permanently delete the files which automatically empties the recycle bin, hence removing the files permanently. Luckily, you can still use a data recovery tool such as EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard to recover recently deleted files in most cases quite successfully.

When we delete a file it simply marks the primary bytes within the file header as deleted as it contains the mapping of the FAT (File allocation table) of the hard drive. So technically speaking, a file is actually never removed from the magnetic hard disk but rather its location related data gets marked as deleted which makes it available for saving new data. Unless you save new files on the disk that overwrite the existing data, the previous data is very well intact on the disk in its original form. So, as long as disk space hasn’t been overtaken by newer files, we still have a chance to recover the deleted data.

A file recovery software is used to search and analyze the file header in the disk, to find out the data that has been marked deleted and to rewrite those codes to recover the scattered file data.

Remember, it’s almost impossible to recover data if it has already been overwritten by newer data. Therefore, there are certain factors that dictate whether data recovery is possible or not:

  • The deleted data shouldn’t be in the system partition. Windows’ paging files are stored in the system partition and the operating system reads and writes them continuously, meaning whether we copy new files or not in the system partition, there is a high chance that the deleted files would get overwritten by system operations automatically.
  • No new data should have been copied to the partition from where the data was deleted.
  • Data recovery tool should be used as soon as possible.

If the above factors are good to go then you can easily recover your deleted data by using a quality data recovery software like EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard which is a free data recovery tool for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X and supports all popular file systems like Fat32, exFat, NTFS, NTFSF, EXT2/EXT3, HFS+, and REFS etc.

How to Use EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard

  • Download and install free EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard by following its installation instructions.
  • Select the location for the recovery scan (hard drive folder, recycle bin, external storage etc)
  • Click the scan button and it will scan the location thoroughly for recovering the lost data.
  • It will show the preview if some deleted data is found.

As soon as you realize data was deleted from a computer or server, you need to act fast. If your business uses a network, immediately restrict access to the drive where the data was located so that no further data can be uploaded and lost files are no longer at risk of being overwritten.
