Gingerbread Still on Top

Google has once again updated its Android Developer site with the latest data in percentages about the active devices running various Android flavors. The data shows that Google’s latest OS Jelly Bean is getting a good start so far, and in last month Jelly Bean got a boost and scooped up to 6.7% of all Android devices. Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” is still on the top with a total of 50.8% Android devices still running Gingerbread, followed by 27.5 % Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich. The installed base percentage of Android 2.2 has decreased to 10.3% now and amazingly still there are some traces of Cupcake, Donut, and Eclairs wandering around the Android market.

This good percentage of Jelly Bean was not expected because only high-end Android devices can support it, but the whooping sales of Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, and Nexus 4 helped Jelly Bean to get this much percentage.

We have also seen that Gingerbread 2.3 is slowly decreasing, dropping with 1-2 percentage points every month, but even today low-end devices are being shipped and powered with Gingerbread only, that is why it is still on the top of boards. Another impressive thing in the graph is that Ice Cream Sandwich has also got quite a good percentage of Android devices being operated on it.

The data was based on the number of Android devices that have accessed Google Play to update or download the apps within a 14-day period from 20th November to 3rd December. The actual audience for this shared data is nonetheless the developers, as they can now decide how to prioritize the development of their applications for the specific Android version most users are using.

Following is the data being collected by Google Play in 14 days to give the Percentage distribution of Android versions running on Android devices:
