Instagram Updated: Improved Camera Experience And a Brand New Filter

Although Instagram had to face a set back last week as its photo-sharing integration was scaled back from Twitter, it is back with a bang and has launched major updates for both of its Android and iOS versions. The main objectives of the update seem to be the improvement of the photo-sharing experience and the improvement of the interface.


Revamped Camera

For iOS users, the camera section has been completely revamped and some new features have also been added. It is much faster and more user-friendly. The improvements made to camera in the iOS version of Instagram include:

  • Instagram styled shutter and shutter release button
  • preview of the most recent picture
  • Improved Camera Image selector to quickly access your last saved photo (for iPhone 5 only)

Willow: A New Filter

A new and totally cool filter named Willow has been added for both iOS and Android users. This filter is a monochrome filter with a fade purple tone and a translucent glowing white border. It can be used with contrast for portraits and architecture snaps.

Improved Tilt Shift

Before this new update, there used to be a vast difference between the effective strength of blur of the preview screen and the output image in your feed and camera roll but now with this update, the blur you will preview will be 100% the blur you will get in the output. Instagram officials said about the tilt-shift improvement:

“We have completely overhauled the blur algorithm to increase quality and accuracy.”

Now the feature of tilt-shift gives more realistic depth because of these improvements, the images below are clearly showing the difference between a blur effect enhancement:

Other New Features

The new update also offers the following features:

  • redesigned news feed with larger images
  • new and beautiful welcome screen
  • grid views with an infinite scroll on user profiles
  • separate album addition for filtered photos named “Instagram” (iOS only)
  • Foursquare button on location pages which open up the details about the venue with the launch of Foursquare app or mobile website
