Back in September, Apple decided to remove the Google Maps app from its mobile operating system (iOS 6) and replaced it with its own map app. Although Apple was expecting to get a good response for its new map app things didn’t go as planned for Apple as it faced a huge backlash from fans because of the inaccuracy and poor detailing of its maps application. Australian Police got so much irritated that it suggested motorists use Alternative maps app and warned them not to use Apple maps.
As soon as the news about the crazy behavior of Apple maps hit the internet, various blogs immediately predicted that Google would soon release a stand-alone map application for the iTunes app store. All those rumors have come out to be true today as Google has just launched its maps app for the iTunes store. Other than accuracy, the new Google maps have also brought with them some cool new features for iOS users such as public transit directions, street view and turn by turn directions.
Google has designed the new app while keeping in mind the flaws in the Apple maps that irked users. The new Google Maps app offers the following features:
- Built-in local search to find addresses across the globe along with the ability to find places for eating and shopping etc, and their user ratings. It also allows the synchronization of searches and favorite places between an iPhone and a PC.
- Voice-guided turn by turn directions are enabled in this app to make the driving experience more comfortable. Transit route directions have also been added and can be found for trains, buses, and subways. Access to live traffic information for different cities around the world is also provided in the app.
- iOS can also view 360-degree pictures of places around the world along with the street view facility.
