Best Spoof Films of All Time

What makes these spoof movies so great? They’re satirical takes on great stories from the past, retold and overdone to emphasize comedy and lightheartedness. These 6 best spoof films of all time are sure to be a delight for years to come:

6. Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)

In this film, the comedy director and actor Mel Brooks takes the legend of Robin Hood for a comedic spin. Robin returns to England from fighting in the Crusades and finds his people oppressed by the greedy Prince John.

As Robin steals from the rich to give to the poor, he goes through his adventures wearing a pair of green tights. Brooks also makes a cameo appearance in his own film, as Rabbi Tuckman.

5. Airplane! (1980)

This film combines elements of romance and adventure into one bitingly sharp comedy. When the entire crew of an airplane becomes too ill to fly, a former pilot must take over the controls and bring the plane safely to the ground.

And don’t call him Shirley!

4. Galaxy Quest (1999)

This film is a parody of the science fiction genre. Based on the cult television series of the same name, the characters must assume their roles from the show, quit going to sci-fi conventions, and travel to outer space to help an alien species.

Fans of Star Trek will enjoy the film’s many parallels, which are overemphasized with hilarious effects.

3. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

When King Arthur and his rag-tag band of knights from the Round Table set off to find the Holy Grail, they have no idea of how wacky their trip will become.

The writing in this film is particularly clever, and when combined with the low-budget special effects, the result is rather side-splitting.

2. Scary Movie (2000)

Drawing upon elements that are commonly seen in horror and slasher films, Scary Movie follows a group of teens that were involved in a hit-and-run accident and now find themselves stalked by a menacing force in a black cloak and mask, a la Scream.

Other popular films referenced in this mélange of teen comedy and horror include American Pie, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, and The Blair Witch Project.

1. The Princess Bride (1987)

This beloved fantasy romance, based on the book by William Golding, follows the adventures of farm-boy turned pirate Wesley, as he navigates his way through a fantasy landscape to rescue his beloved, Princess Buttercup, from evil Prince Humperdink. Fantasy and action-adventure fans will love this hilarious take on the genre.

This film is also known for some of the most well-known one-liners. Remember to:

“never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!”
