Being a medical student can be stressful. Trying to keep up with every little fact and bit of knowledge is even more stressful. Thankfully, there are a number of great iPhone apps for medical students that you can add to your smartphone to keep yourself informed. Whether you need to find a formula or lab value, these medical students’ apps will come in handy. The following are just seven iPhone apps no med student should be without:
7. Epocrates
Epocrates is one of the most comprehensive drug apps available for med students. While the app is free to download, it does require a $159.99 yearly membership to access the information. With a built-in pill identifier, drug interaction reference guide, prescribing information, and one more, it’s worth the cost.
6. Pocket Derm
Skin conditions can often be the sign of something more serious. With this app, you’ll have access to pictures and definitions of over 50 common dermatological conditions. Pocket Derm is an app that every med student should have. Best of all, it was only $0.99.
5. Pocket Lab Values
Medical students in training will find Pocket Lab Values app extremely useful. Featuring 320 lab values, you can quickly determine your patient’s health. At only $2.99, the app is constantly being updated to match the needs of medical institutions across the country.
4. PsychTerms
PsychTerms is another free app that contains over 1,000 psychiatric and mental health terms, phrases, and definitions. You can even add terms to a list of favorites, making them quick and easy to look up. You can also share terms with fellow students through email.
3. Micromedex
Access the same information you access on Micromedex for free. You’ll have access to some of the most comprehensive drug information wherever you go. Whether you need information on black box warnings or drug interactions, this app will have the information you need.
2. MedCalc
Over 300 medical formulas can be found in this $1.99 app. You can search for equations by name or keywords. MedCalc is a great iPhone app for medical students to have on hand at all times. Not only will it be useful through med school, but you’ll also use it throughout your medical career.
1. Medscape Mobile
Use the same app that over 3 million healthcare professionals use to look up clinic information. With access to over 8,000 drugs, 4,000 evidence-based articles, and much more, you’ll find it hard to believe that this app is free to download and use. It’s one of the best medical resources you’ll find for free.
Being a med student doesn’t mean carrying dozens of reference books. With these useful iPhone apps for medical students, you can have all the reference material you need in one place.
I’d like to add a shameless plug for Kidometer (kidometer.com), a pediatric reference tool for age-based norms. Kidometer was pretty popular in the good ol’ days of the Palm & Treo, was recently rewritten for the iPhone, and now sits buried under a pile of 50,000 medical apps in the App Store. Medical Students can quickly get to age-adjusted norms for their pediatric patients using Kidometer ($4.99).
Cheers,
