Gamers love open-world games because they can explore and play for hours while developers love them as they allow them to be as creative as the system can allow, so it’s a win-win situation. Grand Theft Auto III is one of the top games of all time that gave rise to the Rockstar Games’ worldwide fame. This entry into the franchise took a turn for the better by changing the style of gameplay from the top-down perspective of the first two to a 3rd person style.

The developers poured their hearts into creating this game world, and it truly shows because the world is 3.2 square miles in the area. Although compared to the rest of the list, it is relatively small, during its time it was hailed as a gaming landmark of sorts.

24. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

You will be seeing a lot of entries from the Elder World series simply because of the sheer size of their environments. For example, Morrowind is stated to cover a huge 10 square miles area. That is a lot of land that has been computed and made traversable by the players.

Not only is the land huge, but this game also packs quite a bit of activity, making it infamous for its never-ending appeal.

This particular Elder Scroll entry is the predecessor to the last one. However, in terms of the game world, it is slightly larger than even Skyrim. Its world is filled with mountains and forests, various goblins and wolves, all created to resemble a bizarre land from another world.

Special Mention: No Man’s Sky

No Man's Sky largest world

Although No Man’s Sky arguably provides the largest video game world in entire gaming history thanks to its innovative procedural generation approach, given the fact that all other games in this list were handcrafted (as opposed to being algorithmically generated) – we, therefore, decided to mention it as a special case.

You completely missed EverQuest. With the release of Ring of Scale expansion in 2017, it is over 296 square miles or 766 square kilometers. Many of the areas look completely different from one another. Can look up Brewall / EverQuest Maps, and find my website with all the calculations.

  2. Bert Langfeld says:

But Daggerfall was procedurally generated, so surely No Man’s Sky should also count
