The Most Expensive car crash in the history took place in Japan when a fleet of some high performance cars including eight Ferraris, three Mercedes Benz cars and a Lamborghini Diablo, got involved in a high speed accident. Many of the vehicles got severely damaged and most likely will be scrapped. According to the Police no one was seriously injured and most of the drivers sustained minor injuries. Police reports that the cars were at least travelling 50 miles per hour faster than the allowed speed limit. Take a look at the pictures of the aftermath of the pile-up:

You might be wondering what exactly were there super cars doing all together at the same place? So let me tell you the story behind this world’s most expensive car crash. Lets start with the obvious factors which lead to the pile up:

Speed:

As reported by a number of witnesses the cars were traveling at a high speed, at least 50 miles per hour above the speed limit, somewhere around  ”150-170 kilometers per hour”. Though, not insane but fast enough to cause an accident.

Weather:

 One witness described the road as slick, but the local weather reports indicate that it wasn’t raining.

The Road:

The drivers have been described as probably heading from Kyushu to Hiroshima for a Supercar meet in that city. The road is called Chugoku Expressway. If you analyse the Google Street View for the accident site you will see the road narrows into a long and tight two-lane section with almost no shoulder. So the road was actually quite tight at the place of accident.

Sports Cars:

These fast sports cars are not the easiest to drive on the road, a few of them were quite old and lacked the basic traction controls.

Traffic:

On the morning of the crash there were other vehicles on the road too, as seen in the images above.

So, up till now we have established that a bunch of folks were driving some fast cars on slick and narrow road at high speeds, so how on earth they crashed all together. The answer is that they were driving in pairs with the lead driver a 60-year-old businessman from Fukuoka driving a Ferrari F430 Scuderia. As he came across a slow moving car Prius, he attempted to overtake it and spun out and while doing so crashed into the left embankment. Driving in such close formation the cars behind him all reacted, but their proximity created a chain reaction. 14 cars in total reacted and crashed, including a pair of bystanders in Toyotas who had nothing to do with the convoy.

Regardless of how it happened and who made the mistake, it’s a sad way to see $3.85 million worth of exotics destroyed. We hope such expensive accidents don’t happen again and people drive cars with more care and patience.
