iPhone 4 Explodes Mid-Flight on an Australian Airline

Apple‘s iDevices have always been praised by its customers for their reliability, durability and innovation, however one Australian airliner passenger has a different tale to share. On a Australian flight Regional Express ZL319 bound to Sydney, an iPhone 4 (not to be confused with the latest iPhone 4S) carried by a passenger all of a sudden started “emitting a significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow”.
The plane was approaching the run way when the iPhone 4′s combustion started and as per standard safety procedures the flight attendant immediately extinguished the red glow. Luckily no one got injured during the whole incident. The damaged device was immediately handed over to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau for further investigation upon landing of the aircraft, and as of yet no official word has been out over the cause of the combustion of the iPhone 4.
Regional Express, which happens to be a major Australian airline, said in its official press release:
”Regional Express flight ZL319 operating from Lismore to Sydney today had an occurrence after landing, when a passenger’s mobile phone started emitting a significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow. In accordance with company standard safety procedures, the flight attendant carried out recovery actions immediately and the red glow was extinguished successfully. All passengers and crew on board were unharmed.”

We are quite sure that the most likely culprit would must be the battery of the phone as several low quality batteries have exploded and killed in the past too (read about the infamous Nokia 1209 explosion that killed the user). However, this is just a presumption as the reason could possibly be anything, because of the fact that it is still unclear whether or not the exploded iPhone 4 carried any custom modification, battery, coating or extension.
The investigation will take some time and we will keep you updated as soon as the results of the investigation are announced. Stay tuned!
