Top 5 Reasons Why Planning a Personal Budget is Important

26 Jan 2012 by Mary Blanchard

Planning Budget

Although there is so much media emphasis on financial planning and awareness, many people still cannot see the full value of having a budget. Essentially, a budget is a predetermined amount of money set aside for each week, month or year. It might cover all your expenses or it may be limited to a certain area of life, such as a grocery budget or a clothing budget. Whether you are struggling to make ends meet from week to week or you have excess money and are considering how to invest, a budget is equally important to help you understand where your money goes and how to avoid debt.

1. To Save for Big Purchases:

Whether you have a limited income or plenty of excess money to burn each month, there are undoubtedly things which you would like to purchase that are big ticket items. This could include a flat screen television, a college education for your child or even an upcoming vacation for your family. By having a budget you can set aside money each week or month that goes towards a fund for these items. It may only be $10 per week or it may be $500 per month, but eventually the money will add up.

2. To Track Where Your Money Goes:

If every month you think back and can’t remember where you spent all your money, you are certainly not alone. It is quite common to spend money without tracking the spending, which a budget can help to eliminate. A budget means you have a specific amount of money, and each purchase needs to be thought through carefully before spending.

3. For Emergency Situations:

It is highly recommended that everyone has at least a small amount of savings set aside for an emergency situation. This might be the deductible for both your car insurance and health insurance in the case of a serious accident, or legal fees should some incident occur which requires it. It is good to budget for emergency situations and set aside a percentage of your income each month.

4. To Help You Avoid Debt:

If you are one of the many people who runs out of money towards the end of the month and relies on credit cards, you know how frustrating the cycle of debt can be. With a budget tailored to your needs, you can repay credit card debt as well as avoid using your credit cards each and every month.

5. Avoid Arguments:

Many relationship issues are caused by fighting over where the money goes. If you have a set budget to follow each month, you can have fewer discussions about this and prevent many fights in your relationships.

Clearly, creating a budget has many obvious advantages. It can help you to avoid arguments, get out of debt, be prepared for emergency situations, track your spending each month and help you to save for major purchases like education and travel. Consider creating your own budget for personal or family expenses.
